We believe that children are the most vulnerable parties in cases of family litigation. We help parents create arrangements for child care and support that make sense to all parties and help ensure the child’s sense of security and self-esteem. Should you need to modify the terms of a custody or support agreement, we can represent you in post-judgment matters.

To reduce the emotional trauma and financial cost of divorce, we mediate disputes and facilitate collaborative divorce. In addition, we offer parent coordination services to help parents implement custody orders after divorce. We are equipped to address your family’s legal needs at any stage of the divorce process.

Our Answers To Common Questions

Below are answers to questions we often receive, but we are also happy to answer any additional questions you may have.

What factors will impact divorce proceedings in Iowa?

As Iowa has a no-fault divorce law, the main aspect divorce – the dissolution of the marriage – is rarely impacted by any factors. If an individual does pursue a fault divorce, the law may look at certain factors, such as infidelity, abuse or alienation, but that’s a fairly rare situation.

However, the proceedings of a divorce include more than just the dissolution. They will include:

  • Property division
  • Spousal support discussions
  • Child support calculations
  • Child custody issues

These areas are impacted by many components, including your relative income, the length of the marriage and the size of the estate. These are only some of the many factors that you will discuss throughout your divorce. However, just because it is one of the most massive legal and personal shifts you will experience, that does not mean that you need to go through it alone or unprepared. We’ll be with you at every step.

How long does the process take?

While there are some waiting periods involved in any divorce – in Iowa, it is a 90-day waiting period – that does not mean that an Iowa divorce will only take 90 days. The 90-day time period is more of a minimum than a maximum. All the factors above will be major components in why the divorce will likely take longer than you think.

However, regardless of how long your divorce takes – and we have seen divorces take months or even years – you can rely on us to be with you throughout the process. Our caring focus on you means that you will always have someone to confide in when things get difficult.

What can I do to prepare?

Preparing for a divorce can be broken into two large categories. The first is logistics. To prepare logistically, you must have all your paperwork, identification and financial information. That’s not always simple, but it is a necessary step to complete during a divorce.

The other category is emotional preparation. Most people think that choosing to get a divorce is all the emotional preparedness you need, but there is so much more to it. You must accept that there will be stresses now that you never expected. You must prepare yourself mentally for the coming strain. No matter how difficult this gets, we’ll be there to support you however you need.
